Bert Tyrrell, a former mayor and councillor for Hayes awarded the MBE for his services to the community, died on June 9, 2009, at the age of 94 years. He was severely injured by a bomb during service in the Second World War, in Libya, his recovery taking 3 years. He then ran Quality Cars, a car showroom in Southall for more than 25 years and then Nutshell, a sweet shop on the Uxbridge Road, Hayes. Amongst his many contributions to community life, he served as a magistrate at Uxbridge Magistrates Court between 1959 and 1984. and as chairman of the Hayes Older People’s Welfare Committee for more than 35 years.
